The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, one notices an outcry to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
