The McLaren driver narrowly beat fellow driver and title rival Oscar Piastri for the fastest time in the closing stages of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who grabbed the title advantage from Piastri by one point after his victory in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, topped the Melbourne-born driver by 0.023 seconds. Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair throughout the hour before the sprint shootout due at 18:30 GMT. The Red Bull star, the only other driver in the championship fight, trailing with a 36-point deficit Norris, ended up in 17th place as his Red Bull team opted for a different programme. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to crash, albeit lightly, when he lost control at Turn Four early in the session. The Japanese slid over the track edges before rotating through the gravel trap, and was fortunate to escape with just a light touch of the fence. Ferrari's the seven-time champion also lost it, at the very end of the session, spinning around through the fast downhill corner leading to the last turn on to the pit straight. The seven-time champion wrapped up in P19, trailing team-mate the Monegasque driver. Norris and Piastri were significantly quicker of the other competitors, with the German's car third fastest, 0.619 seconds behind Piastri's best. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was in fourth, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and Williams' Sainz.
