RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages down to the site... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
